CNN —Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred said on Thursday that he hopes the league’s investigation into superstar Shohei Ohtani is short, “but I just don’t know” how long it will take. The build-up to the new MLB season was overshadowed following the recent gambling scandal involving Ohtani and his former longtime interpreter Ippei Mizuhara. The Internal Revenue Service and Major League Baseball are investigating the matter, with the league trying to determine whether its strict rules against gambling have been broken. MLB commissioner Manfred can also penalize someone who goes outside legal sports betting entities and gambles with a bookie. The situation involving Ohtani has raised further questions abouts sport’s relationship with betting in the US as the industry continues to grow.

What players are wearing has garnered as much attention as what they’re doing at spring training. “First and most important, these are Nike jerseys. “So I think after people wear them a little bit, they’re going to be really popular,” Manfred said. And the players who would prefer the previous uniform designs realize they don’t have much choice in the matter. He has played 13 seasons and has a career .253 batting average with a .305 on-base percentage, .430 slugging percentage, 164 homers and 636 RBIs.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said Thursday he will retire when his current term ends in January 2029. Speaking at a spring training news conference, Manfred noted he will be 70 years old and will have been commissioner for 14 years when his term ends on Jan. 25, 2029. Manfred, 65, succeeded Bud Selig in January 2015 and was given a five-year term as baseball's 10th commissioner. Tampa Bay hopes to construct a new ballpark adjacent to the current Tropicana Field. “I’m hope that I’m here to go to opening day as commissioner for both Tampa Bay and Las Vegas,” Manfred said.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred is confident the Oakland Athletics will be playing in Las Vegas starting in 2028. “There’s going to be bumps along the road.”The Nevada Legislature approved $380 million in public financing last June for a $1.5 billion stadium on the Las Vegas Strip that is expected to be completed for the 2028 season. “I am confident that the deal in Las Vegas is solid and that the A's will build a stadium in Las Vegas and play there in 2028,” Manfred said. It’s unclear whether the A’s will play 2025 home games in Oakland, Sacramento, San Francisco or a minor league stadium in Las Vegas. We need to know before that exactly where they’re going to be, because it will impact travel issues, whatever, if they’re not in Oakland.”___

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Bryce Harper wants big leaguers to play in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred says pausing the regular season to make that happen would be difficult. “Everyone appreciates the challenges associated with major league players playing in a tournament that is in the middle of our season,” Manfred said before Fridays' World Series opener. The 31-year-old has long been an advocate of MLB taking a break during the season to let major leaguers play in the Olympics. “Casey Wasserman has been supportive of getting baseball back in the Olympics, which we appreciate,” Manfred said.

CNN —Longtime Boston Red Sox pitcher Tim Wakefield died Sunday morning at age 57, the team announced in a news release. “Our hearts are broken with the loss of Tim Wakefield,” the Red Sox posted on X on Sunday. His 186 victories in his Red Sox career are just six behind team record-setters Young and Roger Clemens. At his retirement announcement in February 2012, Wakefield said all he ever wanted to do was to help the Red Sox be champions. “Tim’s kindness and indomitable spirit were as legendary as his knuckleball,” said Red Sox owner John Henry.

BALTIMORE (AP) — Hall of Fame third baseman Brooks Robinson, whose deft glovework and folksy manner made him one of the most beloved and accomplished athletes in Baltimore history, has died. Brooks was just a genuine person.”Coming of age before the free agent era, Robinson spent his entire 23-year career with the Orioles. Robinson contributed an RBI single in the second game and became forever a part of World Series lore with his standout performance in Game 3. The Series ended, fittingly, with a ground out to Robinson in Game 5, a 9-3 Orioles win. There’s a Brooks Robinson Drive in Pikesville, and the annual state high school All-Star game played at Camden Yards is named in his honor.

If he could have scaled Mount Rainier to spread the message from on high, Rob Manfred surely would have. “What do they call it — a virtuous cycle, right?” Manfred said Tuesday afternoon, before the 93rd edition of the All-Star Game. “The rule changes are good, the players stay positive, it makes the fans even more positive about them because the players are positive about them. So it’s really been great for us.”On one point, though, Manfred acknowledged that baseball had simply caught a break. “The culmination of Ohtani and Trout, you can’t plan that.”

CNN —National Hockey League Commissioner Gary Bettman said he has advised NHL teams to no longer wear specialty-themed jerseys during warm-ups, including Pride-theme jerseys. The decision follows Major League Baseball’s announcement last week that teams would not put Pride logos on players’ uniforms and after a handful of NHL players refused to wear Pride sweaters or participate in their teams’ Pride Nights due to their personal beliefs. Some hockey teams opted to forgo their planned Pride Night warmup jerseys altogether. “Thirty-two of our clubs did Pride nights, some do Heritage nights, everybody does Hockey Fights Cancer, some do military nights. Francois Lacasse/NHLI/Getty ImagesBettman also confirmed that NHL Pride jerseys will still be designed and sold and players are free to wear them when they are not on the ice.
